WHY DO PEOPLE WEAR THEIR WEDDING RINGS ON THEIR LEFT RING FINGER?
Question by Nessa:
Why do people wear their wedding rings on their left ring finger?
I was wondering why on the left hand and why on the ring finger for wedding rings. I heard the left hand had to do with being closer to the heart or because most people are right handed but what which one is true? What about the ring finger?

romans and egyptians thought the vein in your “ring” finger on your left hand ran straight to your heart
some cultures are different though. in russia they wear their weddings rings on the right hand.

In some countries its believed that the wedding ring is worn on that finger because the vein in that finger is believed to be directly connected to the heart (so a symbol of love)
The vein is called the vena amoris in Latin “Vein of Love”

because it is closer to the heart. WOW
The other replies are right so I won’t repeat them!
But, in many countries (for example, countries in Eastern Europe) they actually wear their wedding rings on their RIGHT ring finger. Originally they wore their wedding rings on their working hand. Since the right hand is most normal for people to write with, it just eventually became the hand that everyone wore their rings on.
It really just depends on the culture for the reason why they wear their rings on the finger they do!
tradition.
I don’t know!!!
The Ancient Greeks started the practice and then the Romans discovered that the blood vessels in the left arm lead directly to the heart. The heart is the symbol of love.
The Egyptian thing is correct.
I have also heard stories that that is the finger that is least likly to get cut off!
In North America it does tend to be on the left hand because of that vein to the heart story.
However, lots of cultures wear their rings on the right hand. We do, because my husband is from Eastern Europe and we wanted to keep that tradition (which was also in my family, though generations back).
“A traditional reason to wear the wedding ring on the right hand stems from Roman custom. The Latin word for left is “sinister”, which in addition to this sense also has the same senses as the English word. The Latin word for right is “dexter”, a word that evolved into “dexterity”. Hence, the left hand had a negative connotation and the right a good one.” (wikipedia)
